The course will elaborate on key concepts and theoretical approaches in tourism geography and experience management, including e.g. the development of international tourism and its impacts (economic, social, cultural and environmental) on destination areas, as well as value creation and innovation within the experience industries.
Tourism and hospitality is one of the largest global industries and a model example of the experience economy. After completing the course, students will be familiar with the main concepts and global patterns of international tourism fueled by the desire to search embodied experiences from other places. Students will understand the range of economic, social, cultural, and environmental impacts through witch tourism shapes local geographies all over the world. Furthermore, the students will be introduced to the fundamentals of experience management. Through assignments, students will understand the geographical patterns of international tourism and learn to apply theoretical ideas into practice by assessing and developing experiential aspects of chosen tourism and leisure products and services.
Participation in classroom work, exercise(s) and written exam **Further information on modes of study** Lectures and group assignment in English, the individual assignment and exam in English or Finnish. Virtual lectures will be available in Pori also.
Lectures 12 h (2 h/week, Räikkönen). **Spring semester 2018, period III (8 January - 16 February 2018)** Mondays 8-10, lecture hall 16 Teaching will be organized at Turku School of Economics (Rehtorinpellonkatu 3). **Exam** Course includes a compulsory exam (three optional exam dates unless otherwise noted). Register to take the exam at the latest 7 days before the exam date in the Nettiopsu of the Open University. The exam room will be announced 30 min before the exam on the info board in the main lobby of the Turku School of Economics.
The final grade is based on the exam (50%), the written group assignment (10%), the independent assignment (30%) and regular and active participation in the lectures and seminar discussions (10%).
