The course will elaborate on key concepts and theoretical approaches in tourism geography and experience management, including e.g. the development of international tourism and its impacts (economic, social, cultural and environmental) on destination areas, as well as value creation and innovation within the experience industries.
The tourism and hospitality sector is one of the largest global industries and a model example of the experience economy. After completing the course, students will be familiar with the main concepts and global patterns of international tourism fueled by consumers' desire to search for emotional and embodied experiences. Students will understand the range of economic, social, cultural, and environmental impacts through witch tourism shapes local geographies all over the world. Furthermore, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of experience management. Through assignments, students will understand the geographical patterns of international tourism and learn to apply theoretical ideas into practice by assessing and developing experiential aspects of chosen tourism and leisure products and services.
Participation in classroom work, written exam and exercise(s). Lectures and a group assignment in English,an individual assignment and exam in English or in Finnish.Due to the recording and livestreaming of lectures, the students of Pori Campus are also able to conduct the course.
Lectures 12 h (2 h/week, Räikkönen, Ojala); a group assignment (20 h); an independent assignment (65 h); independent study of the literature for the exam (65 h) **Spring semester 2021, period III (11 January - 21 February 2021)** The course in arranged as integrated into degree studies and lectures take place during the day (Mon-Fri, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m). Lectures are organized via remote access (dates and times are given on course timetable above) **Exam** Course includes a compulsory exam. Exams are taken electronically through the Electronic Exam service. E-exam reservation can be made 30 days before exam. E-exam rooms are located in Turku, Pori, Rauma. The final grade is based on the exam (50%), the written group assignment (10%), the independent assignment (30%) and regular and active participation in the lectures and seminar discussions (10%).
