The course aims to provide a basic understanding of why responsible management matters, and what business sustainability consists of. To this end, the course deals with central and topical issues related to business sustainability including sustainability and sustainable development, corporate social responsibility (CSR), sustainability reporting, environmental management & management systems, sustainable business models, stakeholder engagement, sustainable consumption & social movements and business ethics. In parallel, the course seeks to offer students an appreciation of the means through which sustainable change can be achieved or inhibited, be it via individual or collective action. The role of business and industry in building a more sustainable society is addressed. The course seeks to spark critical change agency within the participants toward building a better future. In addition to the examination and class discussions, students compare in teams sustainability strategies of two multinational firms and try out a sustainability related change in their daily life.
After the course, the course participants are expected to have an understanding of the themes and relevant concepts of responsible business and management. Based on the introductory course, course participants can deepen their knowledge in other courses of Studies on Responsible Business (25 ECTS).
1. Participation in classroom work. 2. A compulsory written exam via the electronic examination system of University of Turku 3. Two compulsory assignments: (a) Individual assignment addressing sustainable change in one's daily life. Course participants are expected to return a written report. (b) Group assignment considering firms' corporate responsibility. Group assingment includes a written report and an oral seminar. In the seminar, the course participants present their group work results (4 x 2 h). It is mandatory to participate in one 2 h seminar.
Lectures 15 h **Autumn semester 2020, period I (31 August - 11 October 2020)** The course is arranged as integrated into degree studies and lectures take place during the day (Mon-Fri, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m). Lectures are organized via remote access (dates and times are given on course timetable above) **Exam** Course includes a compulsory exam. Exams are taken electronically through the Electronic Exam service. E-exam reservation can be made 30 days before exam. E-exam rooms are located in Turku, Pori, Rauma.
