MDP in Materials Science

The Master's Degree Programme in Material Science offers the students a study program were chemistry and physics is integrated, and where teaching will cross the traditional borders that usually separate chemistry and physics. A student who has been accepted can choose either the chemistry or the physics track as major, depending on previous qualifications. The minor subject will be the other one.

Fundamental research is carried out in material properties, interfaces, surfaces and nanostructures from both physical and chemical point of view. Applied research focuses on functionalised organic electronics, luminescent materials and porous carriers as well as nanotechnology, superconductivity and magnetism. In addition, various instrumental techniques are used in the study of the chemical, electronic, thermal, optical and magnetic properties of matter.


Learning Outcomes

The students will know and understand major types of materials and their properties, as well as possible applications. They will be able to apply knowledge of advanced science of chemistry and physcis to solve materials-science related problems. The students develop skills to be able to select materials for special purposes, to design and conduct experiments, and to analyze data. They will achieve competence to work in multidisciplinary teams and to communicate effectively.

On completion of this program you will be able to:

  • describe the constitution of materials, together with their chemical and physico-chemical properties;

  • relate the chemical properties and physico-chemical behaviour of substances to their structure and composition

  • understand the basic operational principles for a broad range of devices from a fundamental materials perspective.

  • work effectively in groups and teams of diverse peers to solve scientific problems.

  • use information resources to search and access current and prior research in materials sciences

    The independent research project (final laboratory component) will further develop your practical capabilities. You will:
    • be able to safely and efficiently perform chemical/physical laboratory processes;
    • be able to effectively communicate the results, at a consolidating level
    • develop scientific problem-solving skills.
