DP in Biology

Biology is a study of life and its diversity, structures, functions and development. The most central research subjects in biology are all the organisation levels of life: heredity, cell functions, physiological mechanisms, diversity and evolution of organisms, interaction between organisms, the structure and functions of populations and ecosystems and the effect of environmental change on all these levels, among others. The Department of Biology at the University of Turku offers versatile education that is based on scientific research and multiple options for specialisation for those who are interested in different fields of biology.

The goal of the education is a good overall knowledge of the entire discipline of biology and a strong theoretical and practical understanding about one of the fields of specialisation in biology. The purpose of the degree programme is to educate professionals with capabilities for scientific thinking and for using the research methods, and who have the ability to produce new information in biological research for both the academic world and the society with the methods of the field, as well as to apply and add existing information to their own observations and research results. An essential part of this is the ability to critically assess the already existing information.

The education gives readiness to apply the scientific theories and research methods to bio and environmental research, expertise and development assignments in research institutes, administration, organisations, communications, businesses and universities, and it prepares the student for doctoral training in the bio and environmental sciences, including the fields that are related to them. In addition, the biology education track offers the students a possibility to qualify and work as biology teachers in schools, universities of applied sciences and in other forms of adult education. All the higher university degrees (M.Sc. degrees) also give the readiness to continue to study in the doctoral programmes which lead to a doctorate.
