MDP in Embedded Computing

MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMME IN EMBEDDED COMPUTING

GENERAL INFORMATION

Programme Description

The programme leads to a Master of Science degree in Technology (diplomi-insinööri (DI) in Finnish). It is a two-year programme designed to give a good understanding of theoretical issues for starting Ph.D. studies in the field of embedded computing as well as practical competences for challenging tasks in the embedded systems industry. The field is vast covering both hardware and software aspects. A student will obtain a firm foundation to design, model and implement embedded systems. To justify design decisions, a student will have an understanding of design constraints, hardware/software tradeoffs, design methods and software and hardware architectures as well as programming of embedded systems. Courses are jointly managed by University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University, and take advantage of modern educational technology. Education is given in English, and the students of this international programme learn to work together with associates from different countries and scientific backgrounds.

The programme is located at the University of Turku, Department of the Information Technology, the Embedded Electronics laboratory. Courses are jointly managed by the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University, taking advantage of modern educational technology. Education is given in English. The Embedded Electronics laboratory also collaborates with several major European technical universities in the EIT Digital consortium, one of the Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KIC) of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). Specifically, the Embedded Electronics laboratory is the leading partner in the Embedded Systems (ES) Master’s program at the EIT ICT Labs Master School and hosts, together with the Embedded Systems laboratory, Åbo Akademi University, the Energy Efficient Computing specialisation track in this program.

General Programme Structure

The unit used for measuring academic work is a study point (abbreviated sp), conforming to ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). In Finnish the study point is called "opintopiste" (op). According to the national legislation, and corresponding to the European ‘Bologna’ agreement, the M.Sc. (Tech.) degree (in Finnish diplomi-insinööri) consists of 120 study points, corresponding to two years of fulltime studies. Moreover, a personal study plan will be prepared for every student in order to determine the exact content of his/her studies, depending on the previous education.

Additional studies

The contents of formally eligible students’ previous degrees do not always correspond to the academic level in the programme. Students can be required to complete additional Bachelor level studies while studying for the Master’s Degree. These additional studies (max. 60 sp) are not part of the Master’s Degree. The extent and contents of the additional studies are defined individually for each student when a personal study plan is created in the beginning of his/her studies. Depending on the amount of additional studies, the study time for the Master’s Degree can be more than the targeted study time, which is 2 years. Please note that additional studies are always required from applicants accepted on the basis of a polytechnic degree from an ammattikorkeakoulu institution in Finland. Since the main language of instruction at Bachelor level is Finnish, knowledge of Finnish is necessary for all these applicants.
