Cryptography and Data Security
Networked Systems Security

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

Objectives
This programme offers its students the opportunity to become an expert in one of two very specialized areas in the field of information security: cryptography and data security, and networked systems security. In this program, students gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience whether dealing with secure network and communication systems, secure computing systems or mathematical foundations of data security including cryptographic algorithms and protocols. General program structure
The unit used for measuring academic work is a study point (abbreviated sp), conforming to ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). In Finnish the study point is called opintopiste (op). According to the national legislation, and corresponding to the European ‘Bologna’ agreement, the M.Sc. degree (in Finnish filosofian maisteri) or the M.Sc. (Tech.) degree (in Finnish diplomi-insinööri) consists of 120 ECTS, corresponding to two years of full-time studies. The content of studies varies between tracks. Moreover, a personal study plan will be prepared for every student in order to determine the exact content of his/her studies, depending on the previous education.

If the student holds a polytechnic degree from AMK institutions in Finland, 0-60 ECTS of additional studies are required. These additional studies are NOT included in Master of Science or Master of Science in Technology -degree (120 ECTS). Required additional studies are decided when the personal study plan is created. Additional studies are Bachelor's level studies. The main language of instruction at the Bachelor's level at the Faculty is Finnish and therefore knowledge of Finnish is required for the student not holding a university degree.

2. TRACKS
The programme offers two tracks (major subjects) for the 2016-2018 academic years. Students of the Cryptography and Data Security track graduate with the Master of Science degree (M.Sc.), in Finnish filosofian maisteri or FM. Students of the Networked Systems Security track graduate with the Master of Science in Technology degree (M.Sc. (Tech.), in Finnish diplomi-insinööri or DI). The tracks co-operate closely with the GITM Master’s Degree Programme in the Turku School of Economics, resulting in an opportunity for the students to study information security courses also from the information systems and security management perspective.

CRYPTOGRAPHY AND DATA SECURITY TRACK
The Cryptography and Data Security track focuses on cryptography research. The goal of this specialization area is to educate future experts of the field that have strong and broad knowledge on mathematical aspects of cryptography and data security. Modern symmetric and asymmetric cryptography algorithms and protocols are studied and analysed from the mathematical point of view. The students learn to assess the strengths and weaknesses of cryptographic solutions based on a deep understanding of the underlying theory. The students also gain the ability to pursue applying cryptographic algorithms and protocols for real-life environments.


NETWORKED SYSTEMS SECURITY TRACK
The Networked Systems Security track focuses on researching information security technologies for networked systems and applications of the communication-intensive future. The technological topics covered include system and network security, security of communication systems and applications, and security in system design. The goal of this track is to give its students profound and substantial education and expertise in the networked systems security field. The topic is approached in a multi-disciplinary fashion with obligatory studies also on cryptographic and management aspects of information security.  Optional studies selected personally for each student build a special individual information security expertise profile. Depending on the minor subject chosen as optional studies, the specialization may be for example cryptography engineer, network security engineer or information security manager. The curriculum of this track consists of both theoretical and hands-on study modules, and often the student has the possibility to choose which emphasis to pursue. Also a large group project module called “Capstone project” can be included in the studies. The graduates of this track will benefit from the strong technological, theoretical and practical understanding and skills they have obtained in the programme upon building a successful career in securing the information and communication technology industry.


3. CAREERS AND EMPLOYMENT
The employment percentage of those holding an M.Sc.(Tech.) degree is high in Finland. The degrees from this programme cover different topical areas of information security well and the education benefits from co-operation with companies in the region especially in terms of optional Capstone projects. Based on the personally planned expertise profile, successful careers in the IT sector as information security experts are achievable in the Turku area as well as other regions in Finland and abroad.  The information intensive industry has become the most important business sector in Finland, and in the information society information has become one of the most relevant products. Securing this business sector and the products is vital in the modern era. In Europe, ICT has a critical role in improving the profitability of the industry and in responding to the needs of the society.  In addition to pursuing careers in the IT industry as information security specialists and experts, graduates of the programme are also eligible to apply for admission to PhD studies in the field.
