MDP in Molecular Biotechnology and Diagnostics

General description:

Master's Degree Programme in Molecular Biotechnology and Diagnostics aims to offer the student strong theoretical knowledge and practical skills in developing biomolecular and diagnostical tools and methods. The education is focused on the key technologies of diagnostics and molecular biology with opportunities to apply this knowledge both to medical and other areas of diagnostics. The education is tightly connected with the multifold scientific research and translational activities of Department of Biochemistry/Biotechnology. The programme is part of the Master's Degree Programmes of Biomedical Sciences organized together with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Turku providing multidisciplinary interaction with the drug development and bioimaging programs.

 

Learning outcomes: 

MBD graduates will be given a general and comprehensive understanding of the field of advanced  biotechnology-based in vitro diagnostics (IVD) technologies and their significance and impact on central health care areas and specific disease categories. Emphasis will be given to timely diagnostic trends, technological as well as health related, aiming at advanced biomarker test concepts for preventive medicine, early detection and monitoring of major communicable and non-communicable disease complexes, which are radically changing the expectations on and opportunities for the future global role of IVD. The graduates will be given sufficient theoretical insight and practical training both in central state-of-art test technologies and principles, yet with particular focus on novel technologies likely to enable and form the basis for future IVD platforms. Opportunities for multidisciplinary interaction with the drug development and bio-imaging programs are encouraged.

 

 Content:

  • knowledge and hands-on training in building heterogenous and homogenous bioaffinity assays
  • signal generation systems using advanced fluorescent reporter concepts - fluorescent chelates, nanoparticles
  • generation and modification of central reagents: antibodies and other test intermediates
  • development of tailor-made binders with recombinant antibody libraries and antibody engineering.
  • discovery options identifying novel  biomarkers – proteins, small molecules, nucleic acids
  • technical and clinical evaluation of novel test concepts
  • high-performing, affordable point-of-care approaches and platforms
  • timely, challenging topics for Master  thesis projects
