Department of Biochemistry - Diverse education and research unit

Department of Biochemistry is an independent administrative education and research unit of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The department consists of four parallel disciplines: Biochemistry, Food Chemistry and Food Development, Molecular Biotechnology and Diagnostics and Molecular Plant Biology. The disciplines form a diverse entirety where areas of specialization support and complete each other both in education and research. The department offers diverse academic undergraduate and graduate degree education where lectures and hands-on science work tightly in hand to hand. The department combines scientific basic research and applied research in the development of for example new diagnostic methods and functional foods.

The key assets in the work of the department are diverse scientific know-how, specialization and close networking. The department co-operates with domestic and foreign universities and research groups. Industry and commerce are important partners in the applications and commercializations of research results.

The department personnel consists of 9 professors, 9 university lecturers, 11 university teachers, 11 technical staff members and a financial planning officer and there are around 130 research staff members paid from external funds. In addition a administrative coordinator and four office secretaries are located in the department from the faculty administration service unit. The department has about four hundred students which around one hundred are post-graduate students.
