General description

Until 1968 no black American director had ever been allowed to direct a mainstream American movie by any of the Hollywood studios. Today, by contrast, both mainstream and independent American movies directed and/or produced by African-Americans are both artistically and financially among the most dynamic branches of American film industry.

The course examines how and why this change has happened and looks at the work of some of the most important African-American directors during the last 50 years and how they have influenced the way we now see the United States in its multicultural variety.
