Osaamistavoitteet

Introduction into the subject, presenting its concise picture highlighting general tendencies and trends, marking important books and studies, to direct further studies and research of students.

Yleiskuvaus

Requirements: A basic knowledge of English Romanticism, acquaintance with the major authors. While is more profitable for the students more advanced in the subject.

Paper (5-6 pages): To make a review of existing research (including online resources) and to write an academic introduction to a research paper. The essays can be written in Finnish.

General  Description                               

Literary-historical and theoretical debates have been a part of the history of Western literary studies from the very beginning. The life process itself causes continuous selection and reselection, revision of the traditional paradigm and restoration of a wider perspective. Or, as Nietzche put it in The Genealogy of Morals  “… everything that exists, no matter what is origin, is periodically reinterpreted by those in power in terms of fresh intentions…”.

      The Canon of English Romanticism and approaches to its consideration regularly undergone revision throughout the centuries, being questioned at crucial moments of the cultural and historical change. The most recent of which took place in the 1980-s and at the turn of the centuries when political, ideological and religious matters, expansion of our understanding of world literature and rethinking of national identity together with attention to the concerns of minorities, women, gays and marginalia, neglected aspects and figures provoked an assessment of critical theory achievements of and a recurrent debate of what should be actually read, taught at school and university. Thus canon revision came to a climax in the field of English Romanticism and the stage was set for scholarly, pedagogical and critical attention.

      Starting a talk about English Romanticism today inevitably involves evaluation of these events, existing tendencies and approaches, as well as modern technologies, providing wider opportunities and accessible medium for teaching, promotion of scholarship and research, giving to them a new impetus, facilitating not only text-analysis but also providing new perception of the texts through hyper textual editions, archives and online resources.
