General description

This course takes a look at some of the key social movements of the 20th century, highlighting the role of cultural formations (music, symbols, art, poetry, etc) in movements. With a geographical focus on the United States, the course explores movements of various backgrounds and different cultural forms and texts, asking how and to what end cultural artifacts have been used by a particular movement. Each seminar session is centered on a specific movement through which we will also examine the wider cultural, historical, and political context, as well as the movement’s global interconnections
