Learning outcomes

Course focuses mainly on electron spectroscopy and two commonly used surface analysis methods in the field: ESCA (Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis, also known as XPS) and AES (Auger Electron Spectroscopy). The course will give thorough overview of these techniques from theory to experiments and data analysis. The aim of the course is to understand the working principle of the instruments from the theoretical and practical point of view and learn what kind of information they can provide. Also some other characterization methods and their application Materials Science are presented.

General description

Course starts with the introduction of characterization methods used in materials science. Next we focus on the physical processes related to electron spectroscopy from the theoretical point of view. Then the working principles, design and essential properties of the spectrometers are covered. Theory part is followed by experiments using the ESCA and AES method and introduction to analysis and interpretation of the collected spectra.
