Learning outcomes

After the course students will have an overview of art history of the Baltic Sea region in relation to western art historical tradition and also a deeper understanding of certain aspects in art history of the area. Students will be given basic tools for analysing independently art historical materials of the Baltic Sea region.

General description

The course discusses art history of the Baltic Sea region (mainly Scandinavian, Baltic, Russian and Finnish art) from the Middle Ages up to the present time and explores more profoundly following periods and issues: medieval art history, art during the Swedish great power period, construction of national art life and modernist trends in art and architecture. The focus of discussions is on art history of the 19th and  early 20th centuries.

Study materials

Mode of assessment: lectures and written exam/essay based on lectures and additional material given by the teacher (ca 50-70 pages), excursion to Turku Art Museum.

Obligatory readings will be specified and given on Moodle during the course.

For students having a larger interest in the topics there is a possibility to write an essay based on the material given by the teacher (additional 2 ECTS credits).

Literal feed back will be given to each student.
