Learning outcomes

Students acquire basic knowledge and understanding about political developments of the region, regionalization and its transnational legacy.
Students understand how Baltic and Nordic nation-states are mapping themselves and how interpreting foreign policy action requires examination of national identity.
Students have basic understanding about ontological security as well as current security challenges in the area.
The Baltic Sea Area is often presented as a model region and prime example of new regionalism. This course concentrates on the post-Cold War Era regionalism and region-building, from the Council of Baltic Sea States to the EU’s Strategy for the Baltic Sea Area. The course focuses on how small and marginal states/nations define their role in international order and what are their possibilities to be smart players. During the course it is argued that national identity and security are closely intertwined. The module introduces multidisciplinary focus on small-statehood and national identity by combining the theoretical tools of nationalism studies, international relations, critical security studies, peace & conflict studies, cultural geopolitics and study of collective memory.
