Learning outcomes

Students will learn to recognize and to analyse the diversity and complexity of contemporary Japanese society and culture.

General description

Themes treated in the course include gender and equality, popular culture, traditional arts, minorities, nationalism, religion and social movements. These are put in historical and comparative perspective while the Japanese self-understanding is discussed.
