Learning outcomes

Development Studies program offers a broad overview to global development issues and regional differences in development. It is organized by the Department of Geography and Geology in collaboration with other bodies. Development Studies are suitable for students from various disciplines, but it is recommended that they complete their basic studies in their major subjects before starting Development Studies.
Development Studies aim to:
- deepen student's knowledge and understanding of global development issues
- provide an introduction to the concepts, theories and methods of development studies
- help to understand environmental constraints of sustainable development
- address the above issues from multi-scientific point of view
- enable students to see the value of their own study orientation in development context
- facilitate students for making research on global development and / or in a developing country and
- broaden students' skills in readiness for working internationally.

Content

The program offers basic studies (25 ECTS) and intermediate studies (35 ECTS) packages, both divided into study modules (a/b/c & a/b). Each module includes several optional courses from which students can choose those that suit best for their own interests. Development related internet courses offered by the UniPID network constitute an additional important asset. Please always check the current information and the time of teaching of the UniPID courses from www.unipidvirtualstudies.fi. Also courses given by visiting scholars are frequently organized, sometimes with a short notice. It is advised that students either follow program's website (http://www.sci.utu.fi/kehitysmaa/) of join to the Development Studies mailing lists (see Development Studies webpage). Book exams can be taken on general exam dates - a list is provided in the webpage of the program. Essays and other individual studies should be agreed with the program's coordinator beforehand, if not mentioned otherwise. Grading of the courses follows either the scale of 1 to 5, or occasionally failed/passed.
