Development Studies, 25 op

Learning outcomes

Development Studies program offers a broad overview to global development issues and regional differences in development. It is organized by the Department of Geography and Geology in collaboration with other bodies. Development Studies are suitable for students from various disciplines, but it is recommended that they complete their basic studies in their major subjects before starting Development Studies.
Development Studies aim at:
- deepen student's knowledge and understanding of global development issues
- provide an introduction to the concepts, theories and methods of development studies
- help to understand environmental constraints of sustainable development
- address the above issues from the multi-scientific point of view
- enable students to see the value of their own study orientation in development context
- facilitate students for doing research on global development and / or in a developing country and
- broaden students' skills in readiness for working internationally.

Content

Starting from the academic year 2014-2015 the minor program of the Development Studies will consist of minimum 25 ECTS. The old division between basic and intermediate studies has been removed. The amount of credits, however, is not restricted to 25ECTS, but students can include as many courses as they want in their Development Studies minor. Please notice that all three components should be included (A, B and C) and students should get a specific minimum level of study points from each one of them.

A. Theoretical Basis of Global Development 10–29 ECTS
MAKE0301 Introduction to Development Studies is compulsory, other courses from the component A are optional. Minimum 10 ECTS
B. Practical Work on Global Development 5–20 ECTS
MAAN7554 Working in Developing Countries is compulsory, other courses from the component B are optional. Minimum 5 ECTS
C. Thematic Studies on Global Development 5–25 ECTS
Minimum 5 ECTS
MAKE0335 Global responsibility, 5 ECTS
MAKE0310 Essay on Literature, 1–5 ECTS
General UniPID Courses 5–15 ECTS
Based on your own specialization, one to three general level UNiPID courses can be included to the ‘thematic studies’ –module (module C). This includes following courses, all 5 ECTS. (Note: not all courses are organized on annual basis, follow Unipid webpages for more information).
Other Development Studies
To increase the knowledge about development issues in developing countries in regard to student’s special line and own interests. Here students can include development-related studies. Development related courses from the following programs are recommended in particular:
Minor in East Asian Studies: Nations and States in East Asia
Development studies students can include courses of the East Asian Studies provided by the University of Turku into their Development Studies minors, except the language courses and the courses concentrating on Japan. Courses on Geography – Department of Geography and Geology
Upon agreement students can include courses on development issues provided by the Department of Geography and Geology.
Environmental Sciences – Department of Biology
Upon agreement students can include courses on Environmental Science program. Follow the website of the programme to get the current information and the schedule of the courses.
Sustainable Development Studies
Upon agreement students can include courses on Sustainable Development program. Follow the website of the programme to get the current information and the schedule of the courses.
Political Science – Department of Political Science and Contemporary History
Upon agreement students can include development-related courses offered by the Department of Political Science and Contemporary History. Follow the website of the programme to get the current information and the schedule of the courses.
