Learning outcomes

The minor subject aims to provide students with:
An understanding of how evolutionary theory can provide a framework for the study of psychology and behavior in both human and non-human species.
How different areas (psychology, economics, law, medicine, anthropology, linguistic etc.) are using evolutionary theory to develop their own science.
Become well acquainted with the kinds of questions evolutionary psychologists ask and the methods used to answer these questions. Become well acquainted with how human beings are similar to, and different from, other animals in terms of our mental capacities and behaviour.
Understand the reasoning processes used by evolutionary psychologists to arrive at particular conclusions regarding human animal behavior and mind


This minor subject program provides an exciting opportunity to study Evolutionary Psychology as a minor first time in history in Northern Europe! The new field of evolutionary psychology is the application of evolutionary theory to the study of human behavior and the brain that generates our thoughts, feelings, and actions. This field is growing rapidly, and has attracted widespread interest from people in many fields, including psychology, sociology, anthropology, biology, economics and law. It claims to present a new and different way of understanding things like the family and family conflict, relationships between the two sexes, group cooperation, crime, mate preferences, xenophobia and racism. The systematic application of evolutionary theory can also assist the progress of neuroscience by providing better theoretical foundations for an understanding of the adaptive design and functional requirements of evolved brain structures and neural architecture. This course is particularly suited to all students in life sciences, medical sciences, behavioral sciences, economics, law and social sciences who are interested in finding out how principles from evolutionary biology can provide a framework for the scientific study of human psychology and behaviour.
