KEKO9000 Sustainable Development studies, 25 ECTS

Learning outcomes

Sustainable development challenges companies, organizations and individuals to change their thinking and behavior. Sustainable Development studies (KEKO) supports the student’s ability to understand the challenges of sustainable development and provides broad experience of teamwork and project management. The study module is based on courses related to sustainability or responsible business at the various faculties of the University of Turku. It is recommended at Master’s level, but it is possible to combine also to a Bachelor’s degree. Students from all faculties can apply for a right to study Sustainable Development. For those doing their degree in Finnish, the application period is in April-May. For those doing their degree in English, the application period is in June-July.

Sustainable Development studies are suitable for those who want to understand the problems of sustainable development, learn to analyze various phenomena from ecological, social, economic and cultural perspectives, learn to recognize interdependencies between the different dimensions of sustainability and collaborate with students of different fields.

The Sustainable Development studies (25 cr. for others, 12 cr. for exchange students) consists of compulsory teamwork-based course "Implementing the principles of sustainable development" KEKO9001 (10 cr.) and a selection of optional courses KEKO9002 that concern the various dimensions of sustainable development (15 cr. for University of Turku students, min. 2 cr. for exchange students). Whereas KEKO9001 deepens the student’s understanding of the different value bases underlying the different sustainability perspectives and emphasizes the importance of collective expertise in the meeting sustainability challenges, KEKO9002 courses offer an opportunity to know more of selected ecological, social, economic and cultural topics. It is also possible to agree on combining analytically reported, business-related collaboration projects, conference participations and the like to KEKO9002 optional studies.

The selection of optional courses is listed at: https://intranet.utu.fi/fi/sivustot/keke/sustainable/Sivut/keko2.aspx

The yearly intake is 10 students (English programme) and the application period is June to mid-August.
