Foundations of Bioinformatics, 15 ECTS

Learning outcomes

This module provides the student an overview and basic knowledge in major research areas and methods bioinformatics and computational biology.

After completing this module a student can:
- describe several biomedical research targets for which computational methods are being used and outline some computational approaches
- perform simple analyses for single genes and proteins using various computational methods and web-based tools
- find and use websites of major global databases of genes, genomes, gene expression, gene regulation, DNA and protein sequences, and protein structures
- use stand-alone and web-based genome browsers to integrate, visualize and search genome-wide data
- describe high-throughput sequencing methods, the data generated from different types of experiments and their significance in biomedical research
- prepare publication-quality images and animations of protein and DNA structures
