Geology (BGG) are traditionally strong fields at the University of Turku. The Doctoral
Programme creates a multidisciplinary framework for natural scientific research on humans,
populations and the environment. The research fields are also connected by The University
of Turku Laboratory of Geoinformatics (UTU-LCC) as well as by the research and teaching
activities at the field stations of The Centre for Environmental Research of the University of
Turku (CERUT).

In the Doctoral Programme of Biology, Geography and Geology a Doctor of Philosophy
(PhD) degree can be completed in the following major subjects:

BIOSCIENCES
- Biodiversity Research (BDIV)

Doctoral Programme in Biology, Geography and Geology (BGG)

Doctoral studies 60 ECTS 60 op
In the beginning of doctoral studies post-graduate student will do personal post-graduate study plan together with the supervisor(s) and the research director, which is meant to ensure that the student obtains the knowledge and skills that are needed to successfully carry out the research on which the PhD thesis is based. The research director is responsible for assessing that the studies fulfil the requirements for a PhD degree. The studies can include, apart from courses specifically tailored for doctoral students, also intermediate to advanced level courses targeted at BSc or MSc students. As a rule, basic courses meant for BSc students cannot be included in a doctoral degree. Courses given at any recognised university in Finland or abroad are eligible.
