Doctoral degree, 180–240 ECTS

Learning outcomes

Completing a doctoral degree requires a doctoral thesis (180 credits) and postgraduate studies in the main subject and other studies supporting the degree (60 credits). If the student already has a licentiate degree, only the doctoral thesis is required for the doctoral degree.

The University of Turku Graduate School (UTUGS) was founded in autumn 2011, and all students pursuing a doctoral degree are members of the graduate school via the faculty-specific doctoral programmes. Doctoral students at the Faculty of Social Sciences belong to the Doctoral Programme in Social and Behavioural Sciences or the Doctoral Programme of Clinical Investigation.

The student's research topic and supervisor define their respective doctoral programme and the field in which the degree is completed.

The field of a Doctor of Social Sciences can be contemporary history, East Asian Studies, economic sociology, philosophy, political science, social policy, social work, sociology or sociology of education.

The degree of a Doctor of Psychology is in the field of psychology.

The field of a Doctor of Philosophy can be philosophy, speech and language pathology or psychology.
