Postgraduate studies, 60 ECTS

Learning outcomes

The studies are aimed at supporting the thesis work and to prepare the student both for research positions and for other demanding expert tasks. All doctoral students must take an active part in the training that is organized at the faculty and to present their own research and its progress at least once per academic year.

Doctoral candidates must draft a personal study plan for postgraduate studies (60 credits)contents and tentative schedule.


- Active participation in the discipline's or research group's research seminars
- Postgraduate studies exam or equivalent course (15 credits). The content and method of completion is agreed with the thesis supervisor or professor.
- Courses in the philosophy of science and research ethics provided by the University of Turku Graduate School or equivalent studies

- Other studies organized by the doctoral programme or the university graduate school
- Other academic studies belonging to national doctoral programmes or organized for doctoral degree studies
- Studies in a minor subject
- Studies can also include scientific publications, book reviews, teaching at a university, active participation in scientific conferences, university pedagogical studies, or professional specialization studies.

All doctoral students are recommended to draft a mobility plan. Mobility and collaboration can be credited as follows:

1. National and international postgraduate and field specific courses
- credits according to the course programme and
2. Scientific national and international conferences
- Poster presented in a national conference 1
credit and oral presentation 2 credits
- Poster presented in an international conference
3 credits and oral presentation 4 credits
3. Academic work, educational trips, and methodology education in a Finnish/foreign higher education institution / research institute
- 2-20 credits. The doctoral candidate´s
employment relationship in his/her own unit
cannot be regarded as a study attainment

Requirements for main subjects


The obligatory postgraduate studies exam ( 15 credits) consist of one book exam.
Study materials: Greco & Sosa (eds.): Blackwell Guide to Epistemology, Gale (ed.): Blackwell Guide to Metaphysics ja Singer (ed.): A Companion to Ethics.

Other method of completion is agreed with the thesis supervisor or teacher in charge of the course.


A maximum of 15 credits of language studies can be included in the postgraduate studies other studies.
