Postgraduate Studies in Futures Studies

Learning outcomes

In the Postgraduate studies the doctoral candidates will deepen their understanding and skills in Futures Studies in order to be able to act as an independent researcher in the field of Futures Studies. At Turku School of Economics (TSE), a wide range of research topics have been carried out in the field of Futures Studies. You can specialise in, for example, business foresight, the future of energy and environmental issues, education, large scale socio-economic transitions, future consciousness and futures studies methodology.

Content

General postgraduate studies are carried out by following the instructions in the study guide of TSE.

In the Elective postgraduate studies, the aim is to deepen understanding of the particular contents and/or methods of one's research topic. The student will present a list of planned courses and write down the reasoning of the selection to the Professor. The course list will be negotiated and refined (if necessary) with the Professor, who finally approves the list.

Structure of the Futures Studies postgraduate programme:
240 credits in total, divided into General postgraduate studies 16cr, Postgraduate studies in Futures Studies; 16cr obligatory courses and 16cr of optional courses, elective postgraduate courses 12cr and the doctoral dissertation 180cr.

General postgraduate studies 16cr
- UGSB0001 Information Resources and Tools for Research 2cr (Obligatory course)
Selection of general studies at UTU, the following are recommended:
- YLJ1 Eight lectures on philosophy of science 3cr
- YLJ6 Scientific writing and research communication 4cr
- YLJ8 Workshop on scientific writing 2-4cr
- Other general postgraduate studies offered by KATAJA (Finnish Doctoral Programme in business studies), FDPE (Finnish Doctoral Programme in Economics) or FFA (Finland Futures Academy) approved by the professor

Postgraduate studies in Futures Studies, obligatory courses 16cr
- FUTUJ1 Philosophical, Methodological and Pragmatic Approaches to Scientific Futures Research 3cr
- FUTUJ2 Futures Studies as a Tool for Long-term Strategic Planning 4cr
- FUTUJ3 Directions in Futures Studies Methodology 6cr
- FUTUJ4 Research Seminar 3cr

Postgraduate studies in Futures Studies, optional courses 16 cr
- FUTUJ5 Futures Studies Literature 6-16cr
- FUTUJ6 Summer School & Summer Conference 6cr
- FUTUJ7 National Foresight in Finland and Other Countries 4cr
- FUTUJ10 International Futures Research Conference presentation 1-6cr

Elective postgraduate studies 12cr
The postgraduate student can study rather freely elective courses that are related to the thesis. Also it is possible to receive study credits if the postgraduate student has teached in courses, or supervised Master's theses. Approved by the Professor.

The following postgraduate courses can be studied individually regardless of year (please negotiate with the teacher before studying):
- FUTUJ5 Futures Studies Literature
- FUTUJ3 Directions in Futures Studies Methodology
- FUTUJ10 International Futures Research Conference Presentation

To accomplish the Doctoral degree the student must give an international conference presentation. This can be done either by performing the FUTUJ6 course, or FUTUJ10 course, or another appropriate course/workshop provided by another major subject.

NB: All courses need to be finalised before submitting the Doctoral Thesis to the pre-examination process.
