Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: B2 - C1

General description

This course is only for students of genetics and ecology. The course is divided into two parts: academic writing skills and presentation skills.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student should:
- understand the key issues related to writing academic text in English;
- be aware of the style and structure of academic research papers, paragraph structure, text flow and cohesion;
- be able to effectively present a seminar paper in English, in a style appropriate for an academic conference;
- understand the structure of different presentation formats;
- be able to use signposting in order to improve a presentation's flow, clarity, and comprehensibility for the audience;
- be able to maximize the impact of visual aids and use them effectively;
- be aware of body language in presentation situations;
- be able to use clear and comprehensible language in presentations;
- be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of presentation tools such as PowerPoint and Prezi; and
- be able to evaluate peer presentations based on the elements of an effective presentation.


Topics covered on the course are:
- academic writing style and vocabulary;
- corpora tools for writing in the natural sciences;
- paragraph structure and the format and organization of academic texts;
- flow and cohesion in writing;
- the organisation and structure of different types of academic presentations;
- elements of an effective presentation;
- effective visuals (including poster presentations);
- body language and language techniques;
- audience analysis, including specialists vs. non-specialists and the proper scope and depth of presentations;
- effective visual aids and developing techniques for highlighting key information;
- presentation language, including academic spoken vs. written discourse
- creating rapport;
- responding to questions;
- receiving and implementing feedback from peers and the instructor
