General description

This integrated skills course is a continuation of "English: Academic and Professional Skills for Humanities I", intended for Humanities students to support them in their academic studies and future working life. Students further develop their abilities in reading, writing, listening and speaking in addition to the special discourse and terminology of their fields, and create a portfolio of work to showcase these skills. Emphasis is placed on active student participation.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should:
- be able to write an academic paper;
- be able to give a presentation in English;
- be able to communicate effectively orally in working life situations such as meetings and interviews;
- be able to communicate effectively in writing in working life situations.


- writing an academic paper using appropriate style and referencing;
- giving an oral presentation on a topic related to the field of study;
- practising meetings and interviews;
- writing for working life such as letters, e-mails and CV.

For credit, students must attend all contact lessons; participate actively; and complete course tasks for the final portfolio.

Exemption (AHOT): Students applying for exemption from the course if they feel they already have skills and experience in using academic English at B2 level (or higher). Students wishing to apply for an exemption should submit a written portfolio including:
- a letter of self-assessment which also justifies the grounds for exemption;
- a sample of an extended academic writing assignment in English related to subject of study and using appropriate referencing;
- a CV and a cover letter in English.
Students who present an appropriate portfolio, will be invited for an interview, and asked to give a presentation related to their field of study. Exemption applications should be submitted within one week of the course start date.
