Learning outcomes

Electron transport in low-dimensional systems has revolutionized the semiconducting industries. Today it is possible to tailor certain systems, like GaAs, on an atomic scale to fabricate two-dimensional electron systems in solid-state semiconducting devices. Further fine-structuring using electron-beam lithography allows to make quantum point contacts, quantum dots, quantum wires and so on. The end products composed of such elements are versatile electronic devices.
The aim of this course is to learn how a two-dimenional electron gas (2DEG) can be fabricated and characterized. We will then investigate how electronic devices can be built using the 2DEG, ranging from simple quantum point contacts to the rather complex single-electron transistors. The theoretical background will be the Landauer-Büttiker formalism of electron transport. As application we will discuss selected topics from recent research papers.


Semiconductor heterostructures and the 2DEG. Characterizing a 2DEG: electron density and mobility. Landauer-Büttiker formalism of electrical transport. Quantum Hall effect.
Conductance quantization in quantum point contacts and properties of quantum dots. Applications: single-electron box and single-electron transistor.
