Learning outcomes

Student can describe and explain essential properties and concepts of semiconductors and semiconductor surfaces. Student is able to determine the carrier density within simple models. Student is able to describe the working of the p-n junction verbally and with diagrams and calculations, and to solve problems related to the p-n junction. Student can apply the electron counting rule, and is able to form a surface phase diagram.


Bond types, diamond and zincblende structures, hybrid orbitals, energy band structure and density of states of semiconductors, intrinsic semiconductor, extrinsic semiconductor, statistical distributions of electrons in semiconductors, transport properties of semiconductors, p-n junction, surface energy, semiconductor surface reconstruction, semiconductor surface modeling, surface phase diagram.
