Students should understanding the basics of modern genetics and ecology as presented for example in the text book Morris et. al (2013) Biology How life works. Macmillian. Courses BIOL1301 and BIOL1010 based on this book are arranged at the same time with this course in Finnish.

Learning outcomes

After this course, the student understands the meaning of genetic variation, and its importance in adapting populations to their abiotic and biotic environments. The students knows the central phenomena and concepts of the field, and he/she is able to use these in analyses of plant, animal and human populations. The student learns to see evolotion as a unifying concept in biology, and he/she has a realistic idea on the possibilities of adapting evolution biology in other fields as well.


Introduction to evolutionary forces, and the changes they cause within and between populations and further in speciation. Evolutionary forces are first studied at sequence, locus and multilocus level, and later at phenotypes and plasticity of phenotypes. More detailed introduction to different forms and limits of natural selection. Applications of these to life history traits, sexual traits, behavioral traits, and interactions between species.

The lectures of this course are mainly given in Finnish, but there will be regular group meetings in English as well. Chapters of the book Freeman and Herron (text in English) are discussed, and practical problems will be solved during these session.
