Learning outcomes

After completing this course the student can: find, retrieve and analyze data from major bioinformatic databases; evaluate critically the analysis results; visualize genomic data in a genome browser; construct multiple sequence alignments; explain the concepts of pathway enrichment and term enrichment in gene lists and perform enrichment analyses; and describe the meaning of background/reference gene sets in enrichment analysis.


A general introduction to key areas of bioinformatics: bioinformatic databases, genomics, DNA and protein sequences, protein structures; theory and practice of the most common computational tools used in bioinformatics.

Self-study and assignments in Moodle. Project work.

Modes of study

Self-study (estimated 20h), six weekly assignments (estimated 30h) and a larger project in the end (estimated 30h). The assignments and project are documented in written reports which are submitted in Moodle and evaluated by the tutors.

Your grade is decided by the report of your final project.
