Elementary knowledge of chemistry: reactions and chemical equilibrium, chemical bonds, and chemical formulas in organic chemistry.

General description

This course gives biological background knowledge for understanding biological data and biological experiments which a bioinformatician is most likely to encounter in his further studies and work.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course the student can describe in general terms: how genetic information flows in DNA replication, transcription, and translation; RNA splicing and alternative splicing; structure of DNA and chromosomes and how they change during gene regulation; how DNA sequence variants may effect protein structure and function or functions of DNA and RNA; how DNA and its variants form the basis of heredity; levels of protein structure from primary to quaternary structure and point them out in protein graphics; energy metabolism and enzyme regulation; structures and functions of biological membranes and cytoskeleton; how cells communicate in multicellular organisms; stem cells and their differentiation; how DNA damage and somatic variants can lead to cancer. In addition, the student can list: different cell types and parts of cells; functions of cellular compartments; basic elements in gene regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes; several types of non-coding RNAs and their main functions; a number of modern techniques in biosciences and describe their general principles.


Basics of cell biology, molecular biology and biochemistry for IT students. Biology and chemistry of DNA, RNA, and proteins. Cell structures. Metabolism and biological signalling. Cancer biology.

Teaching methods

Lectures 40h, Homework 20h, Self-study 100h. Two written half-course exams (Midterm and Endterm).

Modes of study

Lectures, assignments in Moodle, written exam.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 0-5.
Your grade will be mainly decided by the average of the grades in two half course exams.
