Organised by
Baltic Sea Region Studies
Person in charge
PhD Silja Laine

Learning outcomes

After the course students will have a basic knowledge of the built environment and urban historical layers existing in the present-day Turku. They will also have a basic understanding of how local, national and international features intertwine in the built environment.

Contents

The course will give an outline of the development of urban structure and built environment in Turku from medieval times to the present. Architecture will be understood in a wide sense; not only as a form of art but also as a scene of everyday urban life. The focus will be in the ways local, Baltic, European and global influences have intertwined in the building of Turku. The course will have a chronological structure, but thematic and theoretical threads concerning cultural interaction, nationalism and the role of history in urban life will run through the course. Due to the long period of time that the course will cover, a special attention will be given to the continuities in the material environment.
