General description

This course advances your basic knowledge of biosciences with details you need for understanding bioinformatics, and teaches methods of genome analyses.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course the student can describe in general terms: basic concepts of gene regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes; epigenetics; various types of non-coding RNAs and their main functions; basic concepts of evolution and phylogenetics; next-generation sequencing technologies. Additionally, the student can perform searches of micro-RNAs and their targets in online databases; use genome browsers to visualize and analyze genome features; use online tools of comparative genomics.


Basic genome biology of genes, promoters and repeat elements; DNA sequencing; genome browsers.
