General description

This guided self-study course uses the book Cambridge Academic English Upper Intermediate. The course focuses on the academic skills and language needed for university study. Materials are available in the Self-study area in Agora. The course is based on materials from the book Cambridge Academic English Upper Intermediate (student's book, Teacher's book, DVD and audio CD) – which comprises authentic academic texts, based on the Cambridge Academic English Corpus (CAEC). Texts for reading are taken from journals and textbooks; lectures are delivered by experienced lecturers and researchers, native and non-native speakers; academic vocabulary, based on the Academic Word List (AWL), is particularly emphasised.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should:
- be able to analyse the characteristics of written and spoken academic texts
- be more aware of academic culture
- be more conscious of digital literacy skills
- be aware of what constitutes plagiarism and able to avoid it
- have developed their abilities in reading, writing, listening, academic language and critical thinking skills
- be aware of strategies for reading intensively and extensively
- be able to use appropriate reading skills to skim and scan texts
- be able to listen to acadecic lectures and take notes
- be more aware of style and appropriateness in writing
- be able to analyse an English academic text and write a summary
- be able to write a text in English in terms of unity, focus and coherence
- be able to use collocations (fixed phrases) from reading of English texts
- be more certain about use of sentence structure, connectives, punctuation, articles
- be more critical and able to ask questions about academic writing, own writing in particular.

To pass the course, the student must complete the Learning Log in detail. In addition, an account should be created in the on-line vocabulary website "Quizlet". The student must use Quizlet actively during the course to create, review and test vocabulary. In addition, the student must participate in meetings with the language tutor and teacher either on-line in the video conferencing environment, or face-to-face.

Completion of the course book; learning diary; quizlet glossary; discussion and meetings with the teacher in charge and Language Tutor.
