Learning outcomes

The overall objective of this course is to learn the application of processes, tools and techniques for conducting scientific research related to international innovation management. Students acquire knowledge about the scientific research process; develop skills and competencies to design research plans; and conduct group research projects using qualitative and quantitative approaches. This course is essential for the development of research-based skills and as such needs to be understood as part of the process to successfully complete Master's theses.


The course is completed in three parts:
Part 1: Research design and problem formulation (1st II):
During the first part of this course students develop a mindset for conducting scientific research and get prepared for many of the critical decisions such a process involves, including: conceptualization of research problems, positioning in academic literature, crafting of research strategies and approaches to conduct literature reviews. Students demonstrate their attainment of part 1's learning objectives through their ability to independently formulate a research strategy and by presenting a research plan in regard to a chosen problem. The learning for this part of the course is conducted both in small group settings and in individual work which has the specific purpose to form the students’ mindset toward work on their Masters thesis projects.
Part 2: Quantitative and qualitative methods development and data collection (1st III):
The second part of this course focuses on the operationalization of research problems. Students learn to analyze research problems and evaluate what types of methods are required to successfully find answers to given problems. Subsequently students learn to generate frameworks to acquire data for qualitative and quantitative research designs. Attaining the objectives of part 2 means that students provide evidence that they are able to design and conduct data collection and can make appropriate decisions concerning the use of diverse methodologies. These skills will be practiced in hands-on research projects and are meant to directly aid the students’ development of their own Masters’ thesis projects.
Part 3: Quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques (1st IV):
The third part of this course takes the research process to the data analysis stage. Students learn to apply basic qualitative and quantitative analysis methods which allow them to draw scientifically sound conclusions. This involves for instance techniques for case and cross-case analyses of qualitative data and the use of analytical tools and the interpretation of derived statistical results.
Successful completion of this part completes the course and it is directly aligned with individual Master's thesis projects and should be seen as part of the support and facilitating system to successfully conduct scientific business research on Masters level. Further, being able to plan, conduct and evaluate research using a scientific approach is a key capability which increases the competencies for managerial decision making in that it introduces the students to different alternative ways of evaluating and developing own knowledge. As such the course overall contributes to the highest level program objective in the Global Innovation Management Masters Degree Program.
