Learning outcomes

During the course, the students will acquire knowledge and understanding on the role of multinational corporations (MNCs) and foreign direct investment (FDI) in the global economy. After the completion of the course, the students should be able to (1) describe the basic theories explaining FDI and understand MNCs’ various motives for FDI; (2) describe and compare the different entry modes of FDI; (3) understand the factors influencing the location choice of FDI; (4) describe and understand the impact of FDI to host countries; and (5) describe and analyze the current trends in global and regional FDI flows. The course will develop the students’ independent learning, written communication, and analytical skills.

Teaching methods

1. Introductory lecture in English 2 h (Pelto), attendance is strongly recommended.
2. Independent study in Moodle2 environment consisting of independent reading and writing essays (and for 5 ECTS also an individual written report).

Modes of study

Independent written assignments, no exam.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 0-5.
The grade for the course (as 3 credits) is based on 5 brief essays on given topics, and additionally on a broader report on a given theme (for 5 credits).

Restricted attendance! In case of excess demand, TSE students majoring in international business have priority over others.
