Learning outcomes

The objective of the course is to familiarize oneself with the selected issues in innovation management. The student learns to understand the process of innovation from its creation to the commercialization of new products and services. The student perceives the complexity and interconnectedness of the innovation process and learns to identify potential bottlenecks in the process. The student will learn to use innovation literature and frameworks to develop concepts and to analyze real life problems. The role of creativity and its effects on the firm, management of innovation capabilities and new product development in an international context form central aspects of importance for this learning. The course enhances the student's analytical abilities, problem solving skills and management abilities for innovation. The course also enables him/her to independently develop new solution approaches and to cope better with the requirements of the inherent complexity. The student improves her/his ability to synthesize exiting knowledge and evaluate situations and information for a real-life innovation task.
The course builds independent reading, analytical thinking, problem solving, knowledge application and managerial skills.

The course consists of separate themes. Each theme accounts for two credits. Themes may vary annually.
In 2013-2014 the course includes three themes:

Career Management (2 cr)
See course FUTU3 / KVS54 Future Studies
This theme is available only for GIM Master’s degree programme students. They need to return their portfolios to Birgitta Sandberg for the course registration.

Enhancing Creativity in an International Firm (2 cr)
The student learns to contemplate the concept of creativity and analyze how it can be increased and utilized in an organization. Understanding, analysis and identification of problems and development of solutions constitute the learning logic of this theme. Special attention is paid to the challenges and opportunities that the international business setting creates for the creativity enhancement. Application of knowledge from other IB courses (i.e. intercultural competencies and communication) is expected and the learning outcome is presented in the form of an essay.

International R&D and New Product Development (2 cr)
The student becomes familiar with the complex nature of managing R&D projects in an international context. The student learns to analyze links between R&D process and new product development process both in an inter-organizational and international setting. The differences between incremental, radical and disruptive innovation and their implications need to be understood. Single-firm embeddedness and strategy are contemplated. The student learns to transfer and apply her/his knowledge in a real-life case study.
