General description

This course is aimed at both Master's and doctoral level students in the Faculty of Law to provide them with advice and support in their academic writing in English.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the students will be aware of the structure of a legal academic research paper for international journals. They should have a better understanding of the grammar and lexis used in academic text. They should better know the difference between formal and informal vocabulary and should understand the principles of textual organisation and flow. The use of punctuation in academic English should be accurate. After completing the course the students will also know how to prepare an essay or scholarly article, as well as being able to utilize electronic legal sources.


The course is divided into two sections: firstly there is a classroom course where the key issues of legal academic writing are covered. On the basis of this teaching students will write a paper and then have a half-hour session of feedback on this paper with the teacher. In addition, students will learn how to utilize electronic legal sources.

Restricted entry 15 Master's students and 5 doctoral students. The course is mandatory for students in the LIS-programme.

Enrolment in NettiOpsu starts on 6th September at 10 am and ends on 13th Friday at 3 pm. Students will be chosen in the order of enrolment but priority will be on LIS-students.

Teaching starts on 19th September 2013.
