Learning outcomes

1. To enable students to identify and to use key legal terms in the areas of law covered by the course. To give students an appreciation of how these terms function in the wider context of English-speaking legal cultures.

2. To familiarize students with basic features of written legal English and to develop their ability to read a variety of legal texts. (e.g., from textbooks, law dictionaries, court decisions, and legal documents).

3. To develop students' oral skills. To improve pronunciation and reinforce vocabulary acquisition through pair and group work. To develop discussion and presentation skills by discussing legal cases and topics.

Contents

Topics drawn from English-speaking legal cultures (e.g., criminal law, constitutional law, family law, contract law and tort law), from European Law and from International Law.

Language practice and exercises in reading, oral production and listening.

Lessons:
Autumn semester: weeks 37-47; Spring semester: weeks 3-13.

Exams:
Autumn semester: 26.11.2013, 18.12.2013, 8.1.2014;
Spring semester: 1.4.2014, 8.5.2014 and 28.5.2014.

1. Students cannot take First Year English and Second Year English at the same time.
2. The English courses must be taken in sequential order.
3. The 75% attendance rule applies to each semester of each course.
4. No extra written assignments can compensate for the 75% rule.
5. Students are required to register for one group and remain in that group.
6. The Exemption Exam for First Year English will be held on 29 August 2013. Registration for the exam by e-mail (oiktentti(at)utu.fi) until 27 August 2013 at 3 p.m.
7. Registration for all the exams is required according to the Rules of the Law Faculty.

Registration for the course 4th September 2013 (8 a.m) to 5th September 2013 (3 p.m.).
