Learning outcomes

The primary aim of the course is to give the new master's and exchange students the basic knowledge of the Baltic Sea Region's history.

Upon completion of the course, students will have deepened their understanding of the region's history, broadened the way that history is understood from a regional perspective and gained the ability to use the information taught in this course in other BSRS Master's level courses.

After the end of the Cold war Europe has experienced a series of dramatic changes and transformations that have especially noticeable in the Northeastern region of the continent. Divided politically and ideologically throughout the Cold war, the Baltic Sea Region has emerged as a genuinely regionalized and dynamic area engaged in diverse forms of cooperation and interaction. The changes didn’t, however, come from out of nowhere, but had a long and multifaceted historical background behind them. This introductory course offers a broad survey of the historical evolution of the Baltic Sea Region from the medieval times to the present-day realities. The main emphasis is on the “big picture” of political, economic, social and military developments in the region.
