Learning outcomes

This course is a combination of theory and practice of Virtual Organizations (VOs). By the end of this course students will be able to:
-make valid comparisons between traditional and virtual organizing logic
-summarize entitative and relational approaches to leadership and their relevance to themes related to virtual organizing.
-identify different challenges that are related to virtual organizing logic and evaluate practical solutions to these challenges which they are likely to confront in their practice in knowledge intensive organizations.
-apply knowledge of virtual team processes to real working virtual teams by being able to consciously affect most important processes.

Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the lectures enlighten the special characteristics of VOs in comparison to traditional organizations. The aim is to build the discussion upon current leadership and organization theories and then go further to the latest theoretical development and their practical implications. Lectures focus on the new form of work and how it reflects to organizations and leadership.
Second part of the course is based on experiential learning exercises (business simulation). In the exercises, students practice decision-making in global virtual context and analyze the results from their decisions. The aim is to self-experience the challenges of virtual communication and to learn the basics of managing a business in a dynamic business environment. In the exercises students at TSE are cooperating online with students from different universities in various countries. They form global virtual teams and steer their own simulated companies.

Teaching methods

Lectures (14h) and Exercises (17h). Exercises include two 6h business simulation sessions (with flexible timing).

Modes of study

Essays. No written exam. Participation in the lectures is reported by a theory based discussion paper. Participation in the simulation game sessions is compulsory and is reported by two reflective essays.
