Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students are able to employ frameworks drawn from strategic management, international business, and entrepreneurship disciplines to managerial problems of high-tech firms. They are able to craft alternative business models that capitalize on a particular technological innovation. They can identify problems related to growth, internationalization, capital funding and intellectual property rights of such firms. They will also understand threats and opportunities related to the evolution of a company’s value network and/or major structural transformation within industry.

The course addresses managerial problems in high-tech firms, with a special emphasis on software and media industries. These industries are characterized by virtual and knowledge-intensive products and services, global supply chains, complex value networks and highly volatile markets. While technological innovations provide ample business opportunities in such industries, establishing a profitable business in them is far from easy. The course is recommended for students who aim at a professional, managerial or entrepreneurial career in marketing and/or product development processes in IT and high-tech firms.

Teaching methods

Students can choose from two options to complete the course:
Alternative A: In this alternative, the student participates in 7 interactive lectures, each lasting 4 hours (28h). Main part of the lecture is used to working with case assignments in small groups. Assignments ask students to apply theories from pre-reading articles into company cases selected from e.g. software businesses. Participation to 5 lecture sessions out of 7 is compulsory.
Alternative B: Alternative B is aimed for students, who will not be able to actively attend to in-class assignments of alternative A. In this alternative, the grade is defined 100% by the exam. The exam covers pre-reading articles and additional books, but there will not be questions addressing lectures or in-class assignments.
