Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to develop a robust understanding of why heterogeneous individuals engage in entrepreneurial activities and what individual and contextual factors impact on this behaviour. By understanding why diverse individuals behave entrepreneurially in different contexts, students learn to appreciate entrepreneurship as a broad social phenomenon, which is not limited to start-up businesses but extends to established organisations and not-for-profit branches of society. Students will also practice their research, project management and presentation skills during this course.

Contents

The course introduces different theoretical perspectives to explaining why individuals engage in entrepreneurial behaviour and reviews empirical evidence on the factors that influence individual entrepreneurial activity. Further, the course addresses different contexts of entrepreneurship and the heterogeneity of entrepreneurs by discussing ‘niche’ forms of entrepreneurship, such as ethnic, female, academic, rural, senior, youth and social entrepreneurship.

Group work presentations. The course is assessed as a whole and it is necessary to pass both the exam and group assignment in order to pass the whole course.

Modes of study

1. Group work assignment including presentation (40% weight).
2. Written exam based on lectures, additional readings and group work presentations (60% weight).
