Learning outcomes

An increasing number of business graduates will end up working in or with small businesses. This course equips students with specific knowledge on how small and family firms operate. After the course the student can define different managerial duties and roles as well as elements of small business management in different phases of the firm life-cycle. Students will acquire a basic knowledge on issues related to small business and family business management. In addition, they will learn to understand family business ownership and business succession issues. After the course the students can apply this knowledge to collaborate and work effectively with different small and family business stakeholders.

Contents

The course comprises lectures, exercises, group discussions and visiting lectures by small business managers. Students will also practice their research and presentation skills, and strengthen their abilities in critical analysis as they conduct a case study in pairs/groups on small and/or family business management.

Group work

In addition to active participation in lectures and in-class discussions, the course includes a significant group work component where students critically analyse a case on small and/or family business management. The course is assessed as a whole and it is necessary to pass both the exam and the group work assignment in order to pass the whole course.

Modes of study

1. Group work assignment including presentation and participation in lectures/discussions (40% weight).
2. Written exam based on lectures and additional readings (60% weight).

Readings will be provided by the lecturers at the beginning of the course.

 

Further information

Attendance is restricted to 30 students. In case of excess demand, TSE students majoring in Entrepreneurship and Management and Organization have priority over others.
