Undergraduate course JO3 Organisaatioteoria gives good basic skills for this advanced level course. It is not, however, a prerequisite for taking part to this course for those students who have otherwise obtained competencies required studying advanced level courses.

Learning outcomes

The main objective of the course is to provide the students with a diversified and up-to-date understanding on the field of organization theory. As a part of this, the course shows how the conceptual knowledge in this field develops as a result of empirical research.
After accomplishing the course the student understands how individual organizations and organizational fields operate and evolve. The student also recognizes how knowledge about these issues is formed as a result of theoretically-driven empirical research.

The course addresses issues of management and organization through organization-theoretical lens. The course covers different streams of organization theory with a simultaneous attention on both organizational and inter-organizational issues. This way the course offers potential research subjects for those students who are in the opening stages of their Master's Theses.

Teaching methods

The course consists of lectures each of which has been allocated a research article introducing the subject in question. Students prepare notes of the articles and deliver them to the lecturer before each lecture. This supports dialogue on each subject matter at the lectures. The course also includes one or two exercises that further elaborate the individual themes. For the final exam students must read both the articles allocated for the lectures and a few pre-defined articles from the edited book not directly addressed at the lectures. The amount of lectures is altogether 20 h.
