Learning outcomes

After the course the student knows how business strategy impacts the IT function and how business strategy, business models and business operations are aligned with IT. She or he understands what the key IT decisions in enterprises are, who should make those decisions; corporate executives, business line executives, IT executives, or all of them. She or he has basic knowledge what is the impact of various IT organization arrangements on what IT delivers to business as well as how information technology and the IT function deliver value to the business of an enterprise and how should such value is measured.

Contents

How to arrange responsibilities for key IT decisions and how to govern IT as an integral part of enterprise strategy planning and execution. They impact not only what value IT delivers to the enterprise but also the financial performance of an enterprise. In this course we dig into how various governance arrangements impact the deployment of IT and the performance of enterprises. Issues covered start from the impact of business strategy approach chosen. We then move to corporate governance of IT and take a look at what key IT decisions are. After that the course tackles the creation of business value from the deployment of IT and we also look into how that value is measured and reported. We then make ourselves familiar with the work and the success factors of the chief information officer (CIO). The course continues by looking at the application of IT governance in some typical challenges descriptive to the strategic management of IT. These issues include IT outsourcing, enterprise architecture management, information management, IT vendor and ecosystem management, influence and negotiation behavior and the management of innovations, programs and project portfolios. During the course we will compare IT governance standards. The exercises of the course include two essays.
