Learning outcomes

The course provides tools for understanding the complex relationship of the two Koreas, paying attention to political, economic and socio-cultural developments.


Since the separation of North and South Korea in 1948, the two countries have developed in different directions with only limited mutual interaction. Regardless of that, the two states have affected each other's policies, economies, and socio-cultural developments, both directly and indirectly. The course looks at the key questions of the contemporary history and society of the two Koreas, paying special attention to their complex relationship.
