Learning outcomes

The main purpose is to teach the students basic principles of creating magnetic fields and measurements of magnetic properties of materials.

Contents

1. Low signal level measurements. Basic sources of noise and their elimination. Measurements at radiofrequencies.
2. Main definitions in magnetism, basic equations. Magnetic field of simple solenoid. Optimization of the solenoid geometry. Simple electromagnets and Bitter magnets. Superconductive and hybride magnets. Pulsed magnets.
3. DC and AC magnetic susceptibility. Types of magnetic materials: ferromagnets, diamagnets. Magnetic field enhancement using permanent magnets, electromagnets with iron core.
4. Measurements of magnetic fields: Hall probes, magnetoresistance sensors, inductive methods, SQUIDs, NMR method. Measurements of magnetization, main types of magnetometers.
5. Modern vacuum techniques. Basic principles of generating vacuum. Main types of vacuum pumps and components.

To the course 12 students are taken in the order of enrolments preferring major students in physical sciences. In case there are room also minor and JOO students may participate in the course.
