Learning outcomes

To give the student an overview of quasars and other active galactic nuclei, with special emphasis on Finnish research.

Contents

An overview of cosmology and the universe. Radiation processes. The standard
model for quasars: black holes and accretion disks. The continuum radiation of active galactic nuclei from radio to gamma-rays. The physics of radio sources, jets and shocks. X-rays and gamma-rays. Classification of active galaxies and unification models. Surveys and samples. Coevolution of active galaxies and galaxies.
